JOSHUA SAMSON AND DOMINION JOSEPH WIN BRONZE MEDAL AT EFUNKOYA TABLE TENNIS TOURNAMENT IN LAGOS

It was another moment of Jubilation and glory for Kogi state yesterday 16th August 2025 at the National Stadium Surulere in Lagos after the duo of Kogi-born Joshua Samson and Dominion Joseph produced yet another scintillating 5-star performance to win a Bronze medal for kogi state in the male singles and doubles at the Efunkoya table tennis championships.

The young boys knew what was at stake from the beginning, and despite missing out narrowly for the gold medal, they kept hope alive and gave it their best for a podium finish in Lagos .In the end, they finished 3rd in the male doubles where Joshua Samson and Dominion Joseph represented Kogi State while Joshua Samson played to the admiration of fans present to win another bronze in the male singles for the State to join the winners and first runners up for a podium glory. 

Kogi state table tennis coach, Jibrin Usman (Shaku) told newsmen that he is happy not only with the 3rd place finish but equally extremely elated with the boys' performance on a day it mattered most

The State Coach Jibrin Usman (Shaku) appreciated the Chairman of Kogi State Table Tennis Association Board Dr Shaibu D Mohammed who provided the players and the coach with funds to cover transportation to and fro and other logistics and also the entire Board for their magnamity and timely intervention in ensuring that the players honour the championship in Lagos

The young boys were charged up by the presence of an Octogenarian, Mama Bilikisu Popoola, a retired Army officer who is also the first female table tennis player to represent Nigeria at the world table tennis championships in Munich,  Germany in 1969.

The former All Nigeria Secondary school champion was introduced to the team by the Chairman of Kogi State Table Tennis Association, Dr Shaibu D. Mohammed and another board member, Engineer Ayoola Mesele, who graced the tournament with the presence of his children.

Dr Shaibu D Mohammed told the team that though, they may not know her or her exploits in the 60s but her presence should inspire them after hearing of how she encouraged and inspired so many with her style of play, Mama Bilikisu Popoola despite her age was cooking for the State contingents during the tournament.

The bronze winning duo of Joshua Samson and Dominion Joseph later presented their medals to the Octogenarian table tennis player, Chairman and EngineerAyoola  Mesele in the presence of their coach and other visiting dignitaries. 

The octogenarian advised them to be dedicated, hardworking, and visionaries if they want to get to the pinnacle of the game. She also advised them to be relentless in the pursuit of academic excellence, saying education is very important in their life as it will help them choose the right path to greatness.
