National Inland Waterways Authority holds one day sensitization meeting and inaugurates Lokoja Area Office Emergency Response and Rescue Team

National Inland Waterways Authority held a one day sensitization meeting for Stakeholders of Maritime Transportation, boat operators, Research and Rescue Marshall on the adherence to safety protocols on inland waterways and inaugurated  Lokoja Area Office Emergency Response and Rescue Team.

The event  which was held in Lokoja, attracted takeholders of Maritime transportation, research and rescue marshall  from various boat landing points across the state to chatt way forward  on the need to adhere to safety protocols  to avoid  accident on waterways, as well as ensure rescue operations if accident occur.

Speaking at the event, the Area Manager, National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Lokoja Area Office, Engineer Titus Samuel charged  Stakeholders of Maritime Transportation, Research and Rescue Marshall of Various Boat Landing Points in Kogi State  to adhere to safety protocols to ensure the safety of lives and property of the people.

Engineer Titus  said  waterway accident is certain, hence the need for every  stakeholders of Maritime transportation and communities to collaborate and involve in rescue mission to ensure the safety of lives of the people.

"Accident on water occur without warning. In such, a critical moment an effective emergency response and rescue system determine the different between life and death. It is therefore our collective responsibility to ensure that our response efforts are swift coordinated and efficient". He said.

He explained that the  strong emergency response framework is built on preparedness, rapid action and collaboration, saying first responder must be equiped with necessary training and resources to handle the situation.

The emergency rescue and response team, as a first responder must strive to improve on basic first aid knowledge, emergency rescue and response drill and ability to act effectively in crisis situation". 

According to him, for effectiveness, there must be real time data sharing and effective communication with neighbouring landing points and communities, as well as post rescue plan to help victims recovered from the accident.
"Emergency response and rescue is a shared duty and we must all committed to better preparedness, strong community involvement and continue improvement of emergency response system ". He said.

The District Chairman, Lokoja and Benue Districts Private Boat Owners, Comrade Abdullahi Bala Yusuf warned Boat operators against overloading, saying anyone caught will be punished accordingly, and urged them to ensure that both operators and passengers always wear life jackets before entering the boat.
In their various remarks, Nda Amodu from Ibaji, Moses Obeh from Agenebode  and Usman Abdulrahnan from Geregu in Ajaokuta landing points among others, promised to abide by the safety protocols and appealed to NIWA for provision of life jackets.

Other reprsentatives from Ganaja Terminal, Shintako, Gobe,  Idah, Ilushi, Kpata, Gande, Kporoke and  Itobe boat landing points assured of collective responsibility to ensure the safety of lives of the people.
